How to Build a Successful SEO Career if You Are an Introvert

I’m an introvert and I’ve started the SEO career. I didn’t know that for the longest time, however. For most of my life, I strived to be an extrovert. I wanted to be in the spotlight because that’s where I thought we should all want to be. My career suffered as a result. I chose many extrovert-oriented jobs. The problem with that approach is that it ended up absolutely exhausting me. It was only once I realized what I was that I could start focusing on what I, as an introvert, excelled at.

It’s quite an impressive list:

  • We’re good listeners. Because we don’t always need to talk, we’re good listeners, which means we often pick up on things extroverts don’t even notice.
  • We’re self-sufficient. Because we like to be on our own and arrange our own affairs, we’re more likely to have a wide range of skills that an extrovert might never feel the need to develop.
  • We’re super focused. That’s what it means to be an introvert – easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation but capable of focusing on a task when the stimulation is just right.
  • We’re easy to please. We don’t need big parties, crazy crowds or huge numbers of friends. We can make do (and in fact be happy) with much less.
  • We’re observant. That’s what we do. We watch the world around us and then take the time to make up our minds about what we saw. It means we’re quickly overstimulated, but it also means we have a better understanding of what it all means.
  • We’re good at studying. As we don’t need a lot of stimulation, it’s easier for us to focus on books, information and facts.
  • We’re trustworthy. We struggle to make friends and therefore are far more likely to be dependable to the ones we have. Oh yes, and we feel less need to fill the silence.
  • We’re committed to our goals. Which is a very important quality for an employee to have.
  • We’re in touch with our feelings. After all, we spend a great deal of time thinking about them and trying to understand them.
  • We’re thought provoking once you get us to talk. We’re not good at small talk. We like meaningful conversations about meaningful things.

Many people think that SEO is one of the extrovert-oriented jobs. But, as I’ve discovered, it suits perfectly for introverts. So how do you use these things if you’re just starting out your SEO career or if you think you are ready to shift to this area?

Make clear (but don’t apologize) for what you are

You don’t need to shout it from the rooftops, but it will help if you make it clear that you’re an introverted individual and what that means (for example, that it does not necessarily make you shy or socially anxious). A lot of employers are looking for exactly that sort of person to join their SEO team, but don’t know where to start looking for them.

Search online

The online world has made it far easier for us to search for SEO career positions that fit us better. No longer is it necessary for us to smooze and make friends at social events to spread our network. Instead, we can reach out to online outfits to find more suitable jobs for us.

Consider contacting a head-hunter

Why wait? I mean, yes they might say no, but what have you lost in that case? They wouldn’t have said ‘yes’ if you’d waited. And if you do manage to connect successfully then you’re doing very well indeed, because even if they don’t give you a new job, they can still give you access to their network – which is bound to contain even more head hunters!

Think about starting your SEO career with freelancing

Freelancing is perfect for us. We can work from home without needing to necessarily interact with large numbers of people.

What’s more, though in the past you needed to be fantastic at marketing yourself as a freelancer, nowadays it isn’t quite as important anymore. You can just join one of those websites where people put up jobs and start applying. Then, when you’ve got a bit of portfolio built up, expand your horizons and reach out to clients directly.

Join a recruitment agency

Provided you got the skill set, resume writing experts will help you with creating your CV in the way it will perfectly show all your skills, recruitment agency’s experts will do the job searching best available SEO positions for you. So why not join one of them? That way you can focus on what you’re good at and other people can focus on what they’re good at.

Think about the long haul

A lot of people think that SEO career segments hopping is the way forward. That might not be the best strategy for introverts. Instead, it’s probably a better idea to find something that’s a real good fit and emphasize how you’re willing to stick around for the long haul. That way you can really find your space where people come to trust you and respect your skill set so that they leave you alone and you can truly excel.

Don’t be afraid of leadership positions in SEO

And finally, don’t be afraid of taking a leadership position like a team leader or SEO department chief. A lot of introverts believe that because they’re introverted they’re not good leaders. If you check out the list above, there is nothing in there that would suggest that. In fact, there are quite a few arguments for why they might, in fact, be better leaders than extroverts, including that they are more observant and less likely to push through their will.

So if the opportunity to lead comes along, don’t decline it just because you’re an introvert. Instead, embrace it because you’re an introvert and take that next step in building your career.
