Here comes the biggest threat to e-commerce stores like Flipkart, Amazon, and Snapdeal! The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Friday announced that it will soon launch an e-commerce platform named “Bharatemarket”. Basically, Bharat Market eCommerce platform will be used by all the Indian offline retailers to sell their products online without having a middleman.

As per CAIT, the Bharat eMarket eCommerce portal will ensure the privacy of consumer’s data and will include nationwide participation by real-world retailers, who have served Indian consumers over the years. The domain name for the website is already decided, and most probably the site will be live into action in the coming weeks.

Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary-General, CAIT, said “The focus of this e-commerce website is to provide and supply essential goods in containment zones during the periods of lockdown,

Bharatemarket, the e-portal website will be piloted in a few cities like Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Bengaluru. Over time, the site will be launched in other cities of India too. It is said that the marketplace will provide end-to-end services in the logistics and supply chains from manufacturers to end consumers, including deliveries at home.

The website will be developed by the Indian Government, and the model of the e-commerce portal will be similar to JioMart. The sellers won’t be charged any commission for selling through the portal. It will be fantastic to witness how Bharatemarket competes against Flipkart, Amazon, and even JioMart.

The idea for Bharatemarket, e-portal website, came after Amazon announced its new program ‘Local Shops on Amazon’ that aimed at enabling local and small shops and retailers to sell their products online. Moreover, Reliance has also announced about the JioMart-WhatsApp partnership to ensure transactions between ‘kiranas’ and consumers and support small businesses.

The harsh but honest truth is that offline retailers do face difficulty in competing against e-commerce stores because of aggressive pricing and discount offers and even if they decide to sell online, the high commission deducted by the e-commerce giants makes it hard to earn the profit. Hence, a platform used by all the Indian offline retailers to sell their products online without having a middleman might help the offline retain sellers to compete against the major e-commerce sites.
