Ready your popcorns.

Best Hidden Gems on Netflix India 2024

1. Soni (2018)

While fighting crimes against women in Delhi, a short-fused policewoman and her level-headed female boss grapple with gender issues in their own lives. (Netflix)

The contemporary Indian society as we know is full of gender-related issues, be it workplace harassment of women, lower wages, the inability of male counterparts of women in workspaces to value their ideas and suggestions, undermining of women’s capabilities etc. The movie Soni, therefore, mirrors the ground reality of female workers in India. The film showcases how engrained, and normalised patriarchy is even in the minds of the powerful and educated men as well as women.

Kalpana, the IPS officer is showcased on two levels, one is when she is in her uniform and how powerful she feels, the other is when she isn’t in her uniform and hence is then like any other ordinary woman in this patriarchal world, she is the junior one in her marriage, and no matter how much she has achieved in her professional line, she is still subjugated in her domestic life. The two women are continuously seen battling the societal expectations, professional expectations and gender roles assigned to them, and are expected to excel in all.

The movie seems very realistic and is a compelling one with a strong message to convey. If you are looking for less drama and more meaning in a film, you should definitely give Soni a watch.

2. Udaan (2010)

Upon returning to his industrial hometown, a young man must decide whether to follow his own dreams or acquiesce to his father’s plans for his future. (Netflix)

In a country where most of the children are advised to become doctors and engineers, where children study to fulfil the dreams of their parents rather than setting their own, a film like Udaan is a very unconventional one. The film shows us what a child goes through when he/she has authoritative parents trying to shape their lives on their own terms and wishes. The problem for such children is not merely of what their needs are or what they want to do, the issue is existential.

Such children do not know what they want from their lives, and how they want to lead it. Udaan thus is a movie like no other, its concept is very different and indeed a new one for the Indian audience. If you wish to watch something out of the box, something unconventional and unique, you should definitely consider watching Udaan.

3. Once Again (2018)

After a chance phone call leads to a daily conversation, a widowed restaurant owner and a lonely film actor plan to finally meet in person. (Netflix)

Once Again is a beautiful love story of two lonely souls trying to find meaning in life. Actor and actress have done their job to their very core, the screen flourishes when the two meets. Unlike Lunchbox, this movie doesn’t tell us much of how they met and what made them have those daily conversations, indeed, what the film focuses on is what happens after they met.

This is a beautiful and decent touch into the life of two middle-aged people. Though the storyline is nice and has a balanced screenplay, the movie conveys its message very elegantly that love, after all, is ageless. Tip- Tune on to this film with your partner.

4. Ajji (2017)

When her small granddaughter is sexually assaulted by a powerful man, and no justice is served, a poor, frail old woman plots her violent revenge. (Netflix)

Ajji is a cinematic gem, it’s perfectly executed revenge narrative not just showcases the ground reality for a segment of society but comments on their struggle, their life and the man-made system we all belong too. The movie has an in-depth portrayal of each character, and we tend to understand the psychology of each of the character and what emotions they are going through.

This rape-revenge thriller keeps you hooked to your screens from beginning to the end. Some scenes are gore and will make you uncomfortable, but ultimately the revenge scene will leave you in aw…

5. Tikli and Laxmi Bomb (2017)

Two frustrated sex workers cut out the middlemen from their business affairs and start a cooperative that’s run entirely by women. (Netflix)

Sex work is illegal in India. However, there is no regulation of the sex work industry despite being a huge one in India. Unlike other Bollywood movies, Tikli and Laxmi Bomb doesn’t portray a negative and problematic image of sex workers. The film does not show sex workers as lesser humans, as you may find such a portrayal in many Bollywood and Hollywood movies.

Tikli and Laxmi Bomb shows us the positive sides, it shows us what they go through and their determination to not be exploited by the system. We are not told what made these women take up the sex work, what we are indeed shown is that they all have faced exploitation and are now ready to claim their rights. The movie is a compelling one, it talks about the essence of sisterhood. There is a unique feminist perspective that we come across on the issues relating to the sex trade and sex trafficking. It is a very thought-provoking movie and a must-watch.

My Thoughts

Even though all the movies on this list are unique and worth watching, my most favourite and a must-watch would be Soni (2018). It addresses contemporary issues. In the modern world, where movements like feminism are on the rise, women are claiming their rights and challenging patriarchy and patriarchal mindsets, the movie shows us how there is still a long way to go.

Even women in positions of power with high merit and achievements are still subjected to sexism, and their potential is continuously undermined by society. You should definitely watch this movie and see how two women battle the patriarchal society in their daily lives. For more you check out this official Netflix India Secret Page for more Hidden Gems.
