Top 10 games to promote creativity

Being stuck in front of a computer for long hours at a time can be incredibly boring, even with so much content available at our fingertips. However, playing games that stimulate your creativity can be a productive and fun way to pass the time. Instead of mindlessly shooting zombies or harvesting sim-farms, try these games that are guaranteed to exercise your brain muscles the next time you’re stuck in a boredom rut.

#1 – Run 3

Run 3 is an action-platformer endless running game, wherein you control a little grey alien who is trying to escape a prohibited zone in a floating space structure. As your alien runs across the screen, you must dodge obstacles such as pitfalls and environmental hazards, while also jumping onto walls and changing gravity. It’s a fun game that tests your reflexes, and there are a bunch of alien characters to unlock with their own special abilities.

#2 – The Last Door

A throwback to classic point-and-click adventure games, The Last Door is a thriller-mystery game full of puzzles and an engaging storyline. Despite the pixel graphics, it can be rather eery, and the puzzles are certainly daunting. The Last Door is an episodic series, but the first episode is free to play. The Last Door was favorably received by critics, an example being this Gamespot review.

#3 – Jewelanche 2

A match-3 gem game similar to Bejeweled, but with an interesting twist. Instead of the jewels being aligned on a grid, they are all stacked on top of each other, and the game uses physics to determine how they collapse when rows of gems are removed. This adds an interesting layer of strategy to the classic match-3 genre.

#4 – Crush the Castle

The game that inspired Angry Birds is lesser known but worth playing to stimulate your brain. You must launch different types of ammunition from a trebuchet, the goal being to knock down castle-like structures and crush the inhabitants within. It is basically exactly like Angry Birds, except that Angry Birds is exactly like Crush the Castle, as CtC came out 8 months prior to Angry Birds.

#5 – Tingly Freecell

Freecell is a Solitaire game that requires careful strategy and planning, and will exercise your spatial intelligence as you must consider several moves at a time. The goal is to arrange 8 columns of cards into descending order of value, in alternating red and black suites, while using a limited number of “free” slots to store cards for later use.

#6 – Cut the Rope

The popular mobile game is available to play in your browser, and is every bit as challenging as its mobile counterpart. In Cut the Rope, you must guide a piece of candy into a little creature’s mouth, by way of navigating it through various environmental puzzles. You will cut ropes, pop balloons, and use a variety of other things in the environment to move the candy. It is simple and cute in design, but addicting nonetheless. Cut the Rope’s popularity is so high, that a massive publishing deal was cut between Nazara and Zeptolab to localize the game for India, hailed as the “largest mobile publishing deal in India”.

#7 – Text Twist 2

Word games are always a great way to stimulate creativity, and Text Twist 2 does a fine job of teasing your brain. You are given a set of letters, and must create as many words as possible from the letters. It’s like Scrabble, except if you had the same letters for the entire game. While it sounds simple, you will be surprised at how easy it is to overlook some of the simplest words that can be made.

#8 – Doodle God Blitz

A fun world-creation game, you play the role of a divinity that shapes the earth, harnessing the powers of earth, wind, fire, and air. Doodle God Blitz is part sandbox and part strategy game, as there are puzzles to complete, and new powers to unlock throughout gameplay. You will combine different tools and elements to unlock new ones, and eventually you will have over 300 powers at your disposal to shape your planet as you see fit.

#9 – Flower Reaction

Flower Reaction is extraordinarily simple in design, yet highly addictive and relaxing. The objective of the game is to set off the largest chain-reaction of flower explosions possible, which explode in brilliant colors, and Flower Reaction has soothing music during gameplay. It’s a very zen-like game, and you’ll feel calm, relaxed, and mentally stimulated as you try to set off huge chain-reactions to garner the most points.

#10 – Loops of Zen

Another simplistic yet extremely addictive puzzle-type game, Loops of Zen is a shape-manipulation game where you must untangle shapes until no jagged ends are left. To put it simply, you will rotate the shapes until the entire mass is connected, with no open ends, creating the perfect loop. It’s a game about peace and harmony, and certainly mentally rewarding.
