Verizon to Sell Tumblr to WordPress Owner

Tumblr

Verizon is selling Tumblr. Yes, you heard it right. Tumblr is a place to express yourself, discover yourself and connect with people with the same interest and bond over the stuff that you love the most. But now, Verizon is selling Tumblr to one of the blogging platforms, WordPress owner Automattic Inc.

Tumblr has been drifting in the face of competition from Facebook, Instagram and Google’s YouTube services. Tumblr was once a hugely influential force in the blogging and social media sphere but the under Yahoo and Verizon, Tumblr became less popular and other social media sites became more popular among the youths.

Verizon got access to Tumblr in 2017 after it purchased Yahoo and, WordPress owner Automattic Inc bought Tumblr for less than $3 million.

The CEO of Verizon Media, Mr. Guru Gowrappan said that he is proud of what the team has accomplished and is happy to partner with Automattic. He believes that Automattic expertise and track record will unlock amazing, new and exciting possibilities for Tumblr and its users.

Last year Verizon team decided to ban adult content on the platform that led many to boycott the site and hence a significant number of users chose another platform over Tumblr. Tumblr also became a safe place for many LGBTQ members who started using this platform to express and explore their sexuality. Automattic Inc’s CEO, Mr. Matt Mullenweg stated that the decisions taken by Verizon team will not be reversed. However, Tumblr will act as a “complementary” site to WordPress.
