There has been an evolution in the design of display devices, from straight to curved and now foldable. Samsung and Huawei came up with their foldable designs with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X launched earlier this year. Google is not too far from coming up with a device having a unique design.
Google LLC applied for a patent at the end of 2018, regarding the foldable device trend. The patent has been published recently on 27th June 2019 that shows that the device will most probably have a multi-page foldable design display panel that works just like a book. The device aims to combine multiple OLED panels through a “book cover” spine. The back or the hinge along with display pages also holds various other components like the battery, processor, memory and the camera of the phone.
Mario Queiroz, leading development of Google’s Pixel phones, just ahead of Google I/O 2019 in May announced, “We’re definitely prototyping the technology. We’ve been doing it for a long time.” The patent shows that both the display panels- front and back, can be used as a screen. The image by Lets Go Digital shows that the phone could have up to five display pages, even more. These could indicate that the display pages could be disconnected from the hinge of the phone allowing multiple screens to work like contents in a book.
This design is just a work in progress and in the improvement phase. Chances are that the device might not even launch commercially, but that makes it something to look forward to. Either way, Google is going to put a new face to the designs of foldable smartphones.
