Tuesday marked the worldwide debut of Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus at the company’s ‘Wonderlust’ launch event. There are a few noteworthy hardware advancements in both phones compared to the iPhones released last year. In comparison to last year’s Pro versions, this year’s do not contain the A16 Bionic chipset, Dynamic Island, or a main camera with 48 megapixels. This year’s iPhones are the first to ship without Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging connector, since they all have a USB Type-C connection instead.
iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus Features and Specs
The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display of the iPhone 15 is protected by a layer of scratch-resistant Ceramic Shield. The iPhone 15 is a dual SIM (Nano) smartphone. The iPhone 15 also has Apple’s new Dynamic Island feature, first seen on the iPhone 14 Pro. The maximum brightness of the screen is 2000 nits, and the phone is dustproof and water resistant to an IP68 level. The iPhone 15 Plus’s screen is 6.7 inches in size and has an OLED Super Retina XDR panel.
The main camera on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus is a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with a 2um quad pixel sensor and an f/1.6 aperture, an upgrade over the 12-megapixel camera on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The smartphone has an ultra-wide camera that shoots 12 megapixel photos and has sensor shift stabilization with an f/1.6 aperture. The new camera island on the front of the phone houses a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera, perfect for group selfies and video calls.
The A16 Bionic processor seen in the iPhone 14 Pro is also used in the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus from Apple. These devices are Apple’s first to use USB Type-C ports (instead of the company’s own Lightning connection) for charging and data transfer. The iPhone manufacturer has been silent on the RAM and battery capacity of both devices, but we should learn more about them from unofficial sources in the coming weeks.
