How does Air Conditioner work?
The rise in temperature and humidity are the two worst issues that people face during summers. To tackle this, we have Air conditioners. AC is a machine that is designed to adjust both the temperature in a room and the humidity.
Let us understand how a split AC works!
Split AC comes with two parts. It has an inside and outside part. The part that is outside is the compressor, and condensing coils. The part that is inside is the evaporator coils and blower. The two of them are connected with the help of pipes or other tubing.
Gas as a refrigerant is used into the compressor where it is pressurized, and the heat in the gas rises. The pressurized gas then goes through a succession of tubes. The tubes are designed to condense the gas into a liquid. The liquid is still pressurized, and it travels via the condenser tubes until they come to an expansion joint. The fluid then passes along the expansion point and becomes a gas again as, in this process, the pressure is rapidly reduced.
Moreover, when the pressure is reduced, the gas also releases a great deal of heat and becomes much cooler. This cool gas then passes back to the compressor to repeat the same process. The air from the room is collected moved into the unit and passes over the evaporator coils. This results in cooling the air and then forcing the cool air back into the room via the blower. This process keeps on repeating, and the air continues to circulate through the air conditioner until a set temperature is reached.
Working of Window Air Conditioner :
The working of the window Air conditioner can be explained by considering two cycles of air:
- Room air cycle
- Hot air cycle
The compartments of both the air cycles are separated by an insulated partition inside the body of the air conditioner. The air moves inside the room air cycle compartment and in the front part of the AC where the cooling coil is located. When the window AC starts, the blowers begin immediately, and a few seconds later, the compressor begins too. The blower starts taking in the room air, which is obviously at high temperature, and it also carries dirt and dust particle. The room air first passes through the filter so that all the dirt and dust is removed. The clean air then passes over the cooling coil, where the major of the two processes takes place.
When the temperature of the cooling coil is much lesser than the room air, the refrigerant (present inside the cooling coil) absorbs all the heat from the air, and because of this the temperature of the room falls down, and we can feel the chilled air.
Now, as the temperature falls down, some dew is formed on the surface of the cooling coil. And, hence when the room air passes over the cooling coil, its temperature and relative humidity reduce.
What does Ton imply in AC?
When we hear that the AC is 1 Ton AC or 1.5 Ton AC we often confuse it with the weight of the AC. But it is not true.
The Ton basically means how much heat the AC unit can remove from a room in one hour. Heat is measured in British thermal unit and, one Ton of AC can remove 12,000 BTUs of air per hour. Similarly, a 4 ton AC is capable of removing 48, 000 BTUs of air per hour. If you are going for high tonnage AC, then it merely means that the AC will result in higher energy cost. An AC with more Ton does more work and hence consumes more energy. Moreover, the more tonnage an AC unit is rated at, the more cooling it offers. Before understanding which coil is best, we need to know the importance of coil in AC. We all now know that the bottom line of how AC functions are all related to a refrigerant gas. The gas goes from a gaseous state to a liquid state by compression. It then again changes back to gas by absorbing all the heat available in the room. The refrigerant process is subdivided into 4 parts:
In this phase, the gas gets converted into high-pressure hot liquid
In this phase, the high-pressure hot liquid refrigerant is converted into a cooler liquid by releasing heat into the outside air. In this phase, coils are used.
3. Expansion Valve
In this phase, a valve is used that converts high-pressure liquid to low-pressure liquid.
In this phase, an evaporation coil is used where it absorbs heat from the room and then again changes the liquid to gas.
To sum it all, the heat from the inside air is moved to the outside air, and this transfer of heat takes place in the coils. So, it is essential to check the type of coils used in them.
Cooper coil Vs Aluminium coil :
1. Heat Transfer
The copper coil is better than aluminium coil for heat transfer.
The copper coil can corrode easily but can be maintained by cleaning regularly and can also be repaired quickly. Whereas, the aluminium coil can also corrode easily, and it is difficult to repair in case of corrosion and thus needs replacement.
In the case of copper coil, more metal is needed to make the coil whereas, for aluminium coil, a lesser metal is required to make the coil.
Copper is costlier than aluminium
Copper is more reliable and is more durable as compared to aluminium.
The copper coil is easy to maintain and clean, whereas the aluminium coil is difficult to clean because of the cabinet around it.
So, as we can see, each of the coils has its own advantage and disadvantage. Hence, it entirely depends on how you use the AC and maintain the same with regular servicing.
