BSNL and YuppTV collaborates to offer video on demand service for users

YuppTV, an internet-based TV and on-demand service provider with content in 12 languages across South Asia, has collaborated with BSNL and will now be able to deliver content on 2.5G, 3G, and 4G networks of BSNL to its mobile broadband and even fixed-line users.  BSNL and YuppTV together signed a memorandum of Understanding to offer an enormous amount of video content to broadband subscribers of the telecom operator.

YuppTV offers YuppFlix, a movie-on-demand streaming service for the expat market. According to P K Purwar, BSNL chairman and managing director, BSNL has 120 million users, and Yapp brings content on a global scale. He said that the brand is going to work on a unique proposition to bring highly rich experience to the customers on a strong technology backbone. He also added that the content is the key to drive data consumption, and the bundling proposition will be compelling one for BSNL subscribers.

Jio’s entry in September 2016 brought down data tariffs to rock bottom and made content strategy of telcos extremely crucial. Also, BSNL is struggling with running day to day operations and paying salaries on time, and the company has sought spectrum by equity infusion of ₹6,767.5 crore.

As per the news, the DoT is currently working on a revival plan for it, which suggests a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for employees and BSNL’s land monetization. DoT plans to fund VRS packages for BSNL at ₹6,365 crore and through bonds. Moreover, the VRS needs to be approved by the Telecom Commission and the Union Cabinet.
