Honor first to Include SOS Panic Button

Huawei, is the world’s 3rd largest smartphone manufacturer and its sub brand Honor today welcomed government’s decision to make panic button mandatory for all mobiles phones from January 1, 2017. The move aims to help improve security of women and assist law enforcement agencies. In August last year, when the government and Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) urged the smartphone manufacturers to check feasibility of embedding such feature in the smartphone, Honor, the leading e-brand of Huawei became the first to respond to the request. The R&D Center in Bengaluru innovated this functionality and today, Honor smartphones sold in the Indian market already come embedded with a SOS feature.

This feature acts as an emergency alarm and sends SMS to three pre-set numbers. The users would also have an option to choose the action which is convenient to them and can allow them to activate alarm discreetly. Alongside, the user can send their location information to the pre-set numbers making it easy for users to reach out for help in the hour of need.

The feature would be embedded in the upcoming batches of all Huawei and Honor smartphones as directed by the government, and all previously sold phones of these models will be able to avail the feature by updating the software. The alarm can be raised by simple actions that users could choose and preset which could include; shake the phone to activate alarm, long hold a defined key. Once the alarm is raised, it will promptly share location information along with a preset message and call informing them during crisis situation.

When we click a photograph, the exposure determines how light or dark the image will appear. It’s calculated by the three essential settings aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Basically, the key to better low-light imaging or higher-contrast fine-quality images is these three features, which are also known as exposure triangles. So, let’s take a look at what they are.

Shutter Speed

A shutter speed basically determines when the camera sensor will be open for coming light. there’s an inverse relationship between aperture and shutter speed. A fast shutter speed does not let in as much light as a slow shutter speed. If you’re using a tight aperture to achieve high depth of field, you will need to use a slower shutter speed (for any given light conditions) than you would while using a wide aperture. Shutter speed is also sometimes called exposure time. So, a fast shutter speed means a short exposure time, while a slow shutter speed means a long exposure time.

Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second, with standard shutter speeds ranging from 1/1000 of a second to one full second.

Effect on Image

Taking a picture of a moving object with a slow shutter speed can create a blurred image of the object (and the suggestion of motion). Using a faster shutter speed makes the object appear more crisply, with better definition and less blurring.

Can you control your Smartphone’s shutter Speed?

Well, it all depends on your device. There are devices like the LG G4 that offer manual control of shutter speed and many other feature in the stock camera app. If your device doesn’t have any such Pro or Manual mode. Google also integrated a new Camera2 API. This API needs to be properly implemented in your device. Which helps the third party app to manually control your camera. So, try out some other camera app for a change.

What is an Aperture?

Basically, Aperture refers to the width of the shutter opening in a camera when a picture is taken. A wider aperture lets more light in and allows pictures to be taken in dimmer light. However, it also creates shallower depth of focus, so that parts of the picture that are more distant (or closer) than the center of focus will appear out of focus. Depending on what effect you’re looking for, this may or may not be a good thing.

The aperture of any camera (not just digital cameras) is measured in terms of “f stop” or “f number.” The technical meaning here involves a 2-based logarithmic scale so that 1 f number difference doubles or halves the amount of light entering the camera.

How it Looks?

A camera’s aperture setting is what determines a photo’s depth of field (the range of distance over which objects appear in sharp focus). Lower f-stop values correlate with a shallower depth of field.

ISO:

The third factor besides shutter speed and aperture that determines the exposure of a picture is the light sensitivity of the electronic array that takes in the light and forms the picture. This is adjustable in most smartphone’s cameras.

The term “ISO” is taken from an international standard measurement of film speed. While the measurement doesn’t directly apply to digital photography it has been borrowed to do so, and the sensitivity to light is displayed as ISO 200, 400, and so on. The higher the ISO sensitivity, the less light will be required to produce a given exposure. With greater light sensitivity, your camera can produce a given desired picture quality at a faster shutter speed and/or a narrower aperture. This is useful when you are taking pictures in dim lighting and don’t want either the blurred motion effect of a slow shutter speed or the narrow depth of field that results from a wide aperture.

It’s better to leave the ISO in automatic adjust mode because the pictures are not always suitable for lower or higher ISO. The picture here might help you understand it better.

We simply love internet, we love being online so much that we own a computer (desktop or laptop), tablet, smartphone and we are looking online for new wearable technology we could connect.

We used to use internet just for communication, sending emails and using instant messengers like msn or yahoo messenger. Then we started using YouTube and social networks. We did this using our desktops or laptops, not anymore. Nowadays you can see one person using multiple devices.

When we connect few or all devices to our home network we can experience lag. If you are not a gamer, you might never have serious problems with lag (Norwegian lagga “go slowly”). But, if you are an online gamer, I can bet you just remembered at least five moments when lag resulted you getting angry, and you probably lost match. Been there, seen that, screamed then!

Do you know what is your internet speed? Is it fast enough and do you need more “power”? Let’s see;

There are several sites where you can check your broadband speed online, check it now and remember it (or write it down). It would be good to check your speed few times (two or three times should be enough to see deviations).

Now let’s see if that is fast enough for you.

1-4 Mbps

This speed will load most sites with ease, you will be able to play some games online without experiencing lag and you will be able to watch YouTube videos (not HD, this could be a problem – slow loading and buffering).

4-6 Mbps

If you have IPTV (internet television) this speed should work great. For an example, Netflix says that you need at least 5Mbps for streaming HD shows and movies. It is important to notice that this is enough if one person (or device) is connected.

6-10 Mbps

This is preferred speed for online gaming and HD videos (YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, etc). This speed should provide uninterrupted gaming and a smooth streaming.

10-15 Mbps

This where you can see “speed”, or at least most users said they noticed the difference. With this speed you can instantly open most websites and cloud services are much more responsive. When you experience this speed you simply can’t go back to slower package.

15-50 Mbps

There isn’t much to say about this speed, by now you should know what can work. If you have several devices or if you usually have more computers connected at the same time this is the speed you need. Also, if you plan to stream your games over a Twitch or similar sites this speed should be good (avoid Wi-Fi).

50+ Mbps

Speeds like this are not usually something we see in our homes, this speed is more for office, video conferencing or real time data analysis. Considering that technology which we can connect to internet is developing and we use it more than ever this speed could be in our homes sooner than expected.

Now you know that megapixels don’t matter at all in smartphone. camera sensor plays a large role in amplifying that raw picture. So, what is a sensor?

An image sensor or imaging sensor is a sensor that detects and conveys the information that constitutes an image. It does so by converting the variable attenuation of waves into signals, the small bursts of current that convey the information. The waves can be light or other electromagnetic radiation. Image sensors are used in electronic imaging devices of both analog and digital types.

A camera uses an array of millions of tiny light cavities or “photosites” to record an image. When you press your camera’s shutter button and the exposure begins, each of these is uncovered to collect and store photons. Once the exposure finishes, the camera closes each of these photosites, and then tries to assess how many photons fell into each. The relative quantity of photons in each cavity are then sorted into various intensity levels, whose precision is determined by bit depth (0 – 255 for an 8-bit image).

However, the above illustration would only create grayscale images. To capture colour images, a filter has to be placed over each cavity that permits only particular colours of light. Virtually all current cameras can only capture one of three primary colours in each cavity, and so they discard roughly 2/3 of the incoming light. As a result, the camera has to approximate the other two primary colours in order to have full colour at every pixel.

The megapixel marketing has treated camera manufacturers well over the years. So, they generally increase the megapixels which in terms are sometimes meaningless. But consumers are getting smart to it. We’ve all seen dodgy images from higher megapixel cameras and know that after a point, megapixels don’t matter for most people. A 16 MP smartphone camera isn’t ever going to be as good as a 12 MP Full Frame DSLR. Why?

Sensor size

The size of sensor that a camera has, ultimately determines how much light it uses to create an image. In very simple terms, a bigger sensor can give more detail that a smaller sensor.

For example, if you had a compact camera with a typically small image sensor, its photosites would be dwarfed by those of a DSLR with the same number of megapixels, but a much bigger sensor will able to gain more information. The large DSLR photosites would be capable of turning out photos with better dynamic range, less noise and improved low light performance than its smaller-sensor sibling.

Types of Sensor

Now, there are not just one particular sensor. There are many kinds of sensor, good, bad, large, small. Currently most of the manufacturing company are using BSI-CMOS, PDAF sensor, ISOCELL, Stacked CMOS, RGBC filter and many more.

All of these terms refer to the construction of the sensor, the sensitivity of each pixel, and the susceptibility to noise. BSI stands for backside illumination, and is a method of producing a camera sensor where the photodetectors are layered above the transistors and other components. It’s a more complex method of CMOS production, but it reduces reflectivity, which in turn improves the light capturing ability of the sensor. BSI sensors are found in nearly all high-end smartphones.

ISOCELL is Samsung-specific technology for their BSI sensors, which places barriers between each photodetector to reduce crosstalk, improving sharpness and colour accuracy, especially in low-light situations. Crosstalk is where photoelectrons bleed between the pixels, causing bloom and halo effects in certain conditions, so reducing these effects is important in producing clean images. Stacked CMOS technology is found in Sony sensors, again improving the ability to capture light by pushing some parts of the circuitry below the pixel array. It’s found in Exmor RS sensors alongside BSI technology.

The RGBC filter made some noise at the time of the Moto X, and is found in some of OmniVision’s high-end sensors. Instead of a Bayer RGBG filter, OmniVision adds in a clear pixel to the filter, which improves low light performance by passing through full brightness information to the processing hardware. The camera then translates this into Bayer photos for the SoC’s image signal processor.
