I have two cardinal rules in my computer repair, and IT support business. The first is to ensure that I don’t leave a client’s computer in a worse state than when I started working on it. The second is to never lose a client’s data. Both are of paramount importance in running a successful business. A few occasions have been when I’ve done further damage to a client’s already faulty computer. Thankfully these occasions have been rare. There have also been times when I’ve come perilously close to losing a client’s files.
How do you go about recovering client files you’ve accidentally deleted? Lets’s look at three methods, each of which I’ve used in the course of my own business activities.
Recover from the Recycle Bin
This is by far the most straightforward method for the recovery of deleted files. As long as the files actually entered the recycle bin, and as long as you haven’t already emptied it, you should be able to readily recover them.
Use ShadowExplorer
On one occasion, I was working with a business client and decided to clean up their backups. I first deleted the contents of their external backup drive in preparation for running a new first-time backup. I then deleted the files and folders from a data drive on their computer. It was only then that I realised that the Documents folder’s location on their computer had been configured to be located on that drive. I had deleted the previous backups of the files and folders and the working files and folders themselves.
My thoughts quickly turned to ShadowExplorer. This simple utility has been around since the days of Windows Vista, and it allows you to browse the shadow copies created by the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service. For this software to successfully recover previously deleted files, System Restore must have been enabled on the computer in question. With System Restore enabled, Windows creates point-in-time copies of files. This means that you can view and recover files present on the computer at those points in time.
With the client in question, I was fortunate that System Restore had been enabled, and I was able to fully recover their files using ShadowExplorer. For step-by-step instructions about using this useful utility, check out this great post at Help Desk Geek.
Use Data Recovery Software
When I first launched my computer repair business, I also carried out some jobs as a subcontractor for a similar but much larger business. At the time, I was extremely inexperienced and, in one of my jobs for this company, I encountered a computer running Windows 8.1, which required a reinstall of the operating system.
Nowadays, I would usually reinstall Windows without first backing up a client’s files, as the old files are moved to a directory called Windows.old during the reinstallation process. However, at that time, I decided to first back up the files to external media before erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Unfortunately, during this process, I accidentally erased the hard drive and the external backup drive.
I clearly remember the moment when I realised what I had done. I desperately began searching for solutions and told the client I needed to take the backup drive away. At this time, I discovered the existence of some handy software that can be used for data recovery. I experimented with different products and eventually settled on a package called EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. I purchased a license and launched the software to begin the recovery of the data from the drive. The process was successful but required 30 hours to fully complete since the drive was 3 TB in size.
Since that time, I have continued to use this software with clients with varying degrees of success. I have also utilised MiniTool Data Recovery software. Both packages can be used to recover files that have been deleted and from damaged or formatted partitions. In fact, in the case just described, I recovered files from a drive that I had accidentally formatted.
So there you have three methods that can be used to recover deleted files on a Windows computer. Each is applicable in a different scenario, and all three have successfully rescued me after the accidental deletion of client files.

Scheduled burn functionality means you can set an end date for content you don’t want to be seen beyond a certain time, and the notes, messages, and pictures will be destroyed on both devices, even if there’s no internet connection. Control the shelf-life of the content you want most under wraps.
Create a duress password so that your phone will instantly delete any sensitive information stored on your phone if someone tries to enter the wrong password too many times. These types of measures keep your phone and livelihood safe, even if the device gets misplaced or stolen.
Sometimes group chats make for more efficient communications. Leading platforms require only three steps to get a secure group chat started with full functionality, including features like voice, picture, and urgent messages. Anonymous group chats have these features, too, as well as randomly generated names.

Nokia held a virtual event on Thursday which was hosted by HMD Global. They launched 6 smartphones that include the Nokia C10, Nokia C20, Nokia G10, Nokia G20, Nokia X10, and the Nokia X20. The entry-level smartphones come under the C series whereas the G series belong to mid-range smartphones. The X Series on the other hand offer 5G connectivity is the top tier smartphone from the whole range.
The Nokia C10 is priced approximately at Rs. 7,000 for the base variant that features 1 GB RAM + 16 GB of storage. The top end of this series includes a 2 GB RAM variant + 32 GB storage option. (prices yet to be released). It’s a dual-SIM smartphone with a 6.51 inches HD+ display. It runs on a quad-core Unisoc SC7331e SoC. There’s only a single 5-megapixel camera on the back.
The Nokia C20 base variant is priced at roughly 7,900 and contains 1 GB of RAM + 16 GB Storage. This also is a dual-SIM smartphone with a 6.51 inches Display with 2D Panda Glass Protection. Having brightness up to 400 nits, this runs on an octa-core Unisoc SC9863a SoC. It’s also available in 2 GB RAM + 32 GB storage option. It comes with a 3,000 mAh battery with 10 W charging.
Nokia G10 starts at a price of Rs 12,300. It’s a mid-range smartphone and the base variant contains 3 GB RAM + 32 GB Storage. The processor under the hood is MediaTek Helio G25. This smartphone has a triple camera setup at the back which consists of a 13-megapixel primary sensor, 2 megapixels macro, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. It also features Night Mode and Portrait Mode. G10 contains a dedicated Google Assistant button and sports a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Nokia G20 starts at a price of Rs 14,000. The base variant contains 3 GB RAM + 32 GB Storage. It features a 6.5 inches HD+ display and runs on an octa-core MediaTek Helio G35 SoC. This device has a quad-camera setup at the rear which includes a 48-megapixel primary sensor, 2 megapixels macro, 5 megapixels ultrawide, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. On the front, it features an 8-megapixel camera sensor. It also consists of OZO Audio for an improved sound experience. The battery size on this one is 5,050 mAh supported by 10 W charging.
The Nokia X10 starts at roughly Rs. 27,400 and it consists of the following storage options – 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage, 6 GB RAM + 64 GB Storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. The processor used here is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 SoC. It has a rear quad camera setup that includes Zeiss optics. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor and features the same quad-camera setup on the back as its partner X10. The optics by Zeiss is also available in this one along with OZO Audio. When it comes to taking selfies, this camera features a 32-megapixel selfie camera sensor on the front. It sports a 4,470 mAh battery that is supported by 18 W fast charging.
All of these smartphones run on Android 11 and are priced almost as they should have been. The Nokia X10 and the X20 have been promised to receive software updates for three years.
A new series of robotic vacuum cleaners have been launched in India. The series in the talk here is run by iRobot Corp, and they have launched the Roomba i3+ and the Roomba i3 robotic vacuum cleaners. They are quite similar to the existing lineup of the iRobot Roomba i7+ & s9+ robot vacuums.
Talking about the features, the Roomba i3+ comes with a woven texture design that doesn’t collect fingerprints or dust. It sports a clean base automatic dirt disposal system which allows the robot to empty its collected dirt in the allotted space inside the docking station. The clean base contains an enclosed Allergen Bag with 4 layers of allergen blocking material. It claims to capture 99% of pollen, mold, dust mites, etc.
The robotic vacuum cleaner comes along with a new redesigned iRobot Home App. It’s available for Android & iOS. This app included cleaning recommendations based on past cleaning, pet shedding, allergy seasons, and so on. The only difference between the i3+ and i3 is that the i3 doesn’t come with the Clean Base (or the docking station). The robotic vacuum cleaners can be controlled with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Any event-based automation can also be set using the iRobot app.
The Roomba i3+ robot vacuum is priced at Rs. 69.900, and the Roomba i3 robot vacuum is priced at Rs. 49,900. Although the introductory pricing for the i3+ is Rs. 59,900, whereas the launch price for the i3 is set at Rs. 39,900. These products will be available across all the iRobot official stores in India. These are bots that have been created to handle step-by-step, usually high volume tasks — such as data migration and entry from one system to another. While the data they are dealing with (for example, the names on a spreadsheet being migrated to another program) may change, the fundamental way that the task is carried out does not. It will follow the same steps on day 100 as it does on day one.
RPA tasks are not, and never will be, the big value-adds that, carried out by a person, would command massive salaries and out-of-the-box thinking. Rather, they’re the mundane, rule-based processes that, once automated, allow users to instead dedicate more of their time to higher-value work.
Cognitive automation harnesses AI
Cognitive Automation, meanwhile, is a term that’s widely used for RPA solutions and tools which deal with tasks that we might ascribe higher levels of intelligence and quick-thinking to were they to be carried out by a person. The difference comes down to the technologies that make this possible and, typically, the jobs’ scope in question. RPA is all about using structured data to carry out monotonous, repetitive tasks with high accuracy and precision. Cognitive Automation deals with greater variability and requires continuous learning and may vary depending on context.
To help it do this, it leverages technology currently being used in artificial intelligence and machine learning to help work with more complicated and unstructured data. Some of these technologies might include Natural Language Processing (NLP), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), text-based analytics, sentiment analysis, voice recognition, data mining, and more. Compared to the rule-based RPA, Cognitive Automation is knowledge-based.
Which is better?
The processes it carries out don’t just involve blindly following a set of rules and reasoning and learning from both successes and failures. It is also far better at handling the “edge case” exceptions that might confuse traditional RPA. For instance, missing information on a form or even something as simple as a date entered in the wrong format may prompt a routine RPA tool to hand that case over to a person to deal with. Cognitive Automation, while not a replacement for humans in every scenario, is nonetheless able to deal effectively with more of these challenging scenarios.
Asking which is better out of RPA and Cognitive Automation is not necessarily the right question. It’s a bit like asking who your next human hire should be: A lot will depend on the problem you need to solve at that moment.
For many companies, the right answer is to try basic RPA tools first to handle the volume and free up time and headspace for human workers by automating tedious tasks. After this, you may add more cognitive automation solutions to handle additionally complex tasks. Cognitive Automation allows enterprises to automate a greater number of their less rule-based, more complex tasks.
Start with the problem.
As Apple CEO Steve Jobs once said, the best move is rarely to start with technology you want to implement and figure out where best it goes. Instead, it’s, to begin with, the user experience and identify the pain points technology can help. However, this new development in the conference call was to be short-lived. It would never gain much popular use in the mainstream, mostly because it required three phone lines to manage video and audio and was a rather expensive and unwieldy device.
The advent of the internet in the early 1970s brought about the development of internet relay chats or IRC. While still used in its basic form, IRC set the groundwork for new advancements over the next several decades, evolving into the Instant Messaging platforms that remain popular today.
Around the time of the new millennium, the webcam invention further enhanced how people communicated and interacted, allowing people to engage in face-to-face interaction and communication over great distances via the internet, from the comfort of their home office.

Always double-check with the third party by contacting them using another means (the most trustworthy approach would be to call them). This way, you can rest easy knowing whether it really was a scam or not.
