Asus ZenFone 3 Max (ZC553KL) Review – More like a Powerbank

Previously this year in August, Asus comes up its new line-up of zenfone 3. It was launched among some of the best premium looking devices with high end price. Now, they are up with new line of their budget device zenfone Max and landed with Zenfone 3 Max. The Max gets its name because of its huge battery of 5,000mAh battery whereas this new ZenFone 3 Max packs in with a smaller 4,100mAh power. The ZenFone Max has conducted as a budget smartphone a price of Rs 9,999.

But, this time we have two different variants of  ZenFone 3 Max which is available. The 5.2″ variant is coming up with a MediaTek chip and will cost you Rs 13,999. The other one is a 5.5″ variant which comes up with a Snapdragon 430 and will cost you Rs 17,999. There are some other minor changes which are there in these model, and we will talk about it in another post.

Now starting with the Design and built of Zenfone 3 Max, this times the phone houses in Full Metal Chassis and no plastic and leather feel. The design is something which is being unique to Asus. This is the identical design which they have used in Zenfone 3 laser which is again there new line up. Zenfone 3 Max added a round curved to its edges which adds a proper grip while holding it in hand. At Least the build quality is better than the cheap, plasticky feel which we get in original ZenFone Max.

The successor of Zenfone 3 max, has made a whole lot of changes in its latest release. This they have added a 2.5D curved glass on top of 5.5″ FHD Display panel which adds extra protection as well as looks to the phone.

Asus Zenfone 3 Max comes with a 5.5-inch FHD with a resolution of 1920×1080 and pixel density of 403 ppi. The Display colors are very cool, and has proper dark which means while watching movies and playing games will look way better. The Sunlight legibility this time has also increased because of better brightness level. The High brightness level does not affect the color quality of the display. Overall the screen for movies and games and for daily use is great.

Coming to the viewing Angle, they are good enough and you won’t be getting any chance to complain about it. While watching movies from odd angle won’t affect you in any way. There are different color modes, which you can change as per your usage by going into the setting panel.

Performance

The phone comes with Snapdragon 430 Helio Octa-core processor which is clocked at 1.4 GHz which features a 3GB Ram. This combo makes this device high in this price. Out of 32 GB of internal storage you get about 25 GB free, you can expand it to up-to 256GB because the phone support Hybrid SIM tray.

Snapdragon handles are device quite well. As well already know asus has optimized there ZenUI to give maximum battery power, and as this device is from MAX series battery backup is quite well. On heavy and aggressive usage you can easily last for more than a day and if you are having a normal use the battery will easily last you for more than 2 days.

But overall when we play high end games like GTA, Riptide, Nova 3, Assassin Creed they all work fine no frame drops or lag is there. In my test i have played all the above mention games on continuous basis there is no battery drain, no heat up and no lag. May be this is all because of software optimization. Oveall in daily use i have no issue regarding the performance part of the phone.

Camera

So, this time Asus Zenfone 3 Max comes up with 16 MP rear Camera which is really improved from the previous max Device. This time they has better camera application with manual controls which are great. The focus and bokeh effect us quite good but i don’t know why while taking images there some noise in every image, it may be due to some software tweak if we edit it a little bit you won’t find any issue in images. from past couple of days the images which i am being posting on my social media are taken directly by Zenfone 3 max and i have no complaints to it. They only need to consider why there is noise in every image. One more thing i wanna mention is that sometime camera won’t focus in certain objects, so to make them focus either you need to change to manual controls or close the camera app and open it again and then it will work fine. Again a software issue is there which stop the laser focus to properly focus on the object. Rest from the time asus has improved a lot with their sensor and much better bokeh effect while focusing from rear camera. The camera can take video shots top upto Full HD and no 4k recording is there untill and unless you install a third party software to make it work.

Coming to the front facing camera of zenfone 3 max, it comes with 8MP shooter with built in feature of beauty mode. images taken using it come out decent but again some noise if we turn off beauty mode. Coming to the video quality taken from front facing cam it can capture up to Full HD video, which seems to be good compare to there older models. But again when we come to front facing cam there are many other options also which are way better from it.

I never like the ZenUI which they came up. This time they have Android 6.0 and top of it again ZenUI skin which is very laggy and buggy, only the best part of this UI is best battery optimization, rest on multitasking and almost everywhere is seems to be sluggish and laggy. Even if you install a side launcher it seems to be little bit better. My suggestion for asus will be to change the ZenUI to stock android to get better performance and better multitasking even with any low end hardware specs, or they should work harder like Xiaomi to get the best SKIN for android till now which is MIUI 8. The lag and slugginess is not due to hardware, it is due to software. This lag starts when you start installing many different software and start doing multitasking intensively. If you are a normal user like normal parents in house, they wont be complaining anything about it. They will only say one thing battery life is awesome no charge for more than 2 days.

Battery

Like the previous device from Asus, Zenfone Max it has slightly low battery but still it give its best in it. Due to Software optimization the battery life is really good. It comes up with 4100mAh battery which is similar to other Xiaomi devices but this is way better in each aspect. Standby time is incredible, rest playing games, movies aggressive chats it will last you more than a day easily. If you are having a normal use like normal games, normal chat, high talks it will easily last you more than 2 days. The just love the battery life of this phone. The only drawback is even having fast charging it charges very slow. 0% to 60% in about 2 hours.

Verdict

After using the device for couple of days i don’t know why Asus has fixed the price so high which is Rs. 17,999, but that UI and no Volte update till now ruined it. They are promising to shoot a update soon which will make volte support to all there 4G supported phones. Overall if we consider the device as per the looks, battery and offline availability its a thumbs up, else for better UI and better performance there are other devices also with low budget and same metal built.

There is one more huge difference in Display which again gives the advantage to Lenovo K6 Power. Pixel Density of K6 power is 441ppi whereas pixel density for Redmi 3s Prime is 294ppi. Performance & Speed Test

Now, coming to the performance part both the devices have the same hardware in it. Snapdragon 430 CPU, Adreno 505 GPU and everything is same. Both the phones come up with 3GB/32GB model.

The only point which we can consider in performance is the software which they have used because as per my experience MIUI is much stable compare to Lenovo own custom Skin. This is Lenovo has worked a lot on its UI. They have tried to add almost all the features which MIUI 8 offer like Dual system, and dual Apps.

Rest I have not tested Lenovo much so won’t comment much about its performance.

Camera

Now coming to the camera part of both the phones, the rear camera of both the phones are same which is 13MP shooter and captures almost same kind of images, some of the shots are better on k6 Power whereas some of the same shots are better on Redmi 3s. The neglected difference is there which is hard to found easily.

Coming to the front facing camera, K6 power is having an 8MP camera whereas Redmi 3s prime has a 5MP shooter. Bot capture decent images but I think K6 power has an edge over here. It is not because of its increase in Megapixels but because it captures more details with less noise compared to Redmi 3s prime.

Battery

The main focus of Lenovo k6 power is its battery, the company adds up 4000mAh battery which is little bit low compare to Redmi 3s Prime as it comes with 4100mAh. But still, it is mostly highlighted because lenovo has added a new software tweak which they are saying as the ultimate power saving mode in which your phones becomes like a featured phone with all things black and white like we see in samsung Devices earlier. Due to this tweak they can give you the maximum power. This tweak only makes the edge for K6 power in the competition with Redmi 3s Prime.

Verdict

As per my views Both the devices are great in its prices. But here are few point which we need to consider like first Price.

  1. Redmi 3S prime is available for 9,000 whereas k6 Power is for 9,999 which Rs. 1000 higher.
  2. Availability of Redmi 3s prime is not easy because of flash sales, but k6 power will be easily available any time.
  3. K6 power has much better screen quality compare to redmi 3s Prime.
  4. k6 power has a stereo speaker which is way better from Redmi 3s Prime.
  5. K6 power has a better front facing the camera as well as better battery life because of its ultimate power saving mode.
  6. Redmi 3s prime has an IR blaster which is an advantage to the phone.
  7. Redmi 3s is having better Stable UI compare to which Lenovo offers.

The converted file will be in .docx format, which is the main format for editing text files. Most of us are used to using MS Word, so for best results we suggest it as well. By clicking on your converted file, you will see a preview of the converted file and you can export it to the app where you wish to edit it by clicking on the Share button in the bottom left corner. Both the devices have great built as well as design so that I won’t be complaining anything about it like in the previous model of Xiaomi, and there was some design issue.

These buttons provide proper tactile feel while you press them continuously. There is no patterned feel on buttons, on any of the devices.

Other than this both phones come with IR blaster on the top which works fine, but on Le 2 it is much easier to connect because of its Universal Remote app, you can even connect an AC (Air-conditioner) remote with it, But when we come to Redmi Note 4 Remote, there are so many devices which are preloaded in the application but still there are many devices which we cannot find in the app due to which we cannot control some of those devices using our Redmi Note 4. This issue can be easily fixed just by sending the app update in the near future. So, as of now Le2 is the winner in this case also.

Display

Redmi Note 4 as well as LeEco Le2 are having an even same pixel density of 401ppi. As per my views, I won’t find any difference between the display quality and colors on both the phones. They both has Deep Black and great colors which will make watching movies and playing games a nice experience.

Viewing Angles of both the devices seem to be same because I was unable to find any difference while watching movies on both the phones. So, here we have a tie between both the phones.

Performance & Speed Test

The Performance of any smartphone depends on a processor which is there. The Le 2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 MSM8976 where as in Redmi Note 4 it comes with Helio X20 which is a first of its Deca-Core Processor in the market. In the case of performance Le 2 and Redmi Note 4 performs hand in hand with no difference. But the real performance and speed of the handset depend on the OS which it is running. Xiaomi MIUI is very smooth and fast in terms of memory management and optimizations whereas LeEco is working hard on their eUI to be the best in the market. They are giving additional services which they are calling Le Membership worth Rs 4,900 for Free in which you can watch premium movies, Live TV shows for Free. But still, Redmi Note 4 and its MIUI 8 awesome features make me attract towards it.

This time in Redmi Note 4 they have added two different modes in performance which you can switch as per your usage. If you want to do some high-end gaming stuff switch to performance mode where as for normal use you may set the device on normal mode which also increases its battery life.

LeEco comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of inbuilt storage which is not expandable where as Redmi Note 4 comes with 3GB ram and 64GB of inbuilt storage which is also expandable to upto 256GB which in this case make the Redmi Note 4 winner (We have not tested Redmi Note 4 2GB RAM Version).

Overall performance on both the device are great. I have also tested the Antutu score where the clear winner was Le 2, but in daily usage and multi-tasking, gaming I won’t find any kind of difference in both of them. They both can handle any high-end stuff with no smudging and lag in performance.

Camera

LeEco here come with 16MP rear camera whereas Redmi Note 4 this times has 13MP rear camera and both of them shots really good images in different lighting conditions. But this times Redmi Note 4 back camera is slightly better compared to Le2, Color, bokeh effect, saturation all are much better on Redmi Note 4, even the camera application of Redmi Note 4 is much better. Coming to the video part Le 2 has a single lead over here as it supports 4k recording which takes high quality of video, but still video recording on Redmi Note 4 back camera is much better because of OIS which is present in the phone, whereas LeEco has no OIS in there phone. This makes Redmi Note 4 the clear winner in Rear Camera performance.

As we move to the front , Le 2 has 8MP camera whereas Redmi Note 4 has only 5MP Camera. But when we compare Redmi Note 4 front camera with LeEco Le2 front Camera, Le2 is the clear winner over here. I don’t know how but yes, LeEco has better front facing camera clarity compare to redmi note 4.

So, now its your choice which one to go, better selfie camera or better back camera.

Battery

Before we end the comparison, let’s take a look at the battery of these two smartphones. Redmi Note 4 offers 4100mAh capacity battery where as Le 2 offers only 3000mAh capacity battery, which is relatively quite lower when compared to Redmi Note 4. Redmi Note 4 has a bigger battery but other than this you will get Fast Charging support in Le 2 which is really very helpful to charge your phone in 60 to 70mins (0-100%). But still comparing the battery life of both the phones Redmi Note 4 is the clear winner over here.

As per my views both the devices are great and both the companies have done a whole lot of research while designing and constructing the final product. Both has some of the pros and some of the cons like Redmi Note 4 has better rear camera whereas Le2 has a better front facing camera. Redmi Note 4 has better battery life whereas Le2 has Fast Charging.
