Meizu relaunches a Range curated for the Indian market

Meizu Technology, a Chinese company, has launched two new range of budget smartphones: the C9 and the M6T, and M16th that has been kept under affordable premium segment. All the smartphones will be available exclusively on Amazon.in. Meizu is backed by Alibaba, its devices are manufactured in India, supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative “Make in India”. Moreover, Meizu has tied up with Reliance Jio with an aim to further the agenda of digital inclusion and bring feature-packed smartphones at affordable prices to Indians.

The Meizu C9 is the most affordable smartphone in this range. It comes with 13 MP rear camera coupled with a 5.45-inch display having 720×1440 pixels. It has face unlock light sensors, proximity sensors, accelerometer and fingerprint scanner along with 3000 mAh battery at just Rs 5,999. A special introductory offer has been provided by Amazon and Reliance Jio to the users for the first 10 days wherein the device will cost Rs.4,999/-. The sale has started from 5th December on Amazon.

Another handset named Meizu M6T has additional features including multi-frame noise reduction technology, ergonomically sound design and low-level photo experience. It sports 13MP+2MP dual camera which uses a Sony IMX278 RGBW four-colour sensor. It is powered by Octa-core processor for the seamless gaming experience. With the battery of 3300 mAh and a fingerprint sensor, the cost of this device has been set at Rs.7,999/-. This will be available in two colour variants in India that are black and rose gold.

The Meizu M16TH is equipped with a 12MP+20MP dual real camera and 20MP front shooter with f/2.0 aperture that supports 1080p video recording. It had 1.43mm notch display that supports a screen to display ratio of almost 90% thereby distinguishing it from all other smartphones. It runs on Flymer user interface based on Android 8.0 Oreo and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 paired with 3010mAh battery. It comes as 8GB and 128GB variant and will be available on Amazon at Rs.39,999/-.

CEO and country head of Meizu India, Ramashish Ray said, “Our industry is trapped in this mad rush of specs vs price, and a commoditized hardware game. Brands have forgone a key consumer need of the smartphone being a personal device and not just a functional handset. The fact that a personal device is also a projection of the self and design plus craftsmanship is a key element of the equation has been compromised. While we will offer great features at competitive price points, we want consumers to start identifying us as a brand, who appeals to their own sense of style”.

Commenting on the launch, Director-Category Management of Amazon India, Mr Noor Patel said, “We are excited to announce Meizu C9 exclusively on Amazon.in. Smartphones are one of the largest categories on Amazon.in and we are committed to providing our customers with the best selection at great prices. With the launch of Meizu C9, we bring to our customers a quality smartphone that combines all aspects of a good user experience.”

The second day of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 revealed a lot of interesting details. Qualcomm 855 is the newest and latest chipset for mobile platforms. The Snapdragon 855 chipset will also be able to support 5G headsets and speeds. OnePlus’ CEO Pete Lau announced that their upcoming smartphone will be powered the new and powerful Snapdragon 855 chip. OnePlus will be one of the first among a few companies to come out with the latest chipset by Qualcomm early in 2019.

Pete Lau, on stage talked about the company’s relationship with Qualcomm over the past years. He said,” We know that the 855 is the most powerful chipset, it is definitely the one and only choice [for our phone].” Many reports have come out earlier regarding OnePlus to launch a 5G enabled smartphone early in 2019. The reports suggest the launch date somewhere around the MWC. Few reports suggest that the OnePlus will not be naming the device as OnePlus 7, but instead may start another lineup of devices. The 5G device will support the 5G connectivity initially in Europe on EE’s network.

The Snapdragon 855 is made using the 7-nanometer process, also used by Apple’s A12 Bionic. It will also feature the company’s new X24 modem, which is an upgrade from the X20 modem in Snapdragon 845. It is to be noted that that the 855 alone will not be able to give full 5G and companies will have to add the X50 modem to add the 5G functionality. Many significant changes will also be seen in the camera department which will come with the updated Spectra 380 ISP (Image Signal Processor). Artificial Intelligence related performance is claimed to be improved as all the Adreno, Kyro and Hexagon processors are capable of working together and form a fourth generation AI engine.

This staggering statistic helps drill home the importance of securing IT infrastructure and the costs of not doing so. As workloads become more dispersed, with many businesses outsourcing infrastructure to the cloud by using AWS, Office 365, Azure, G-Suite, etc., the challenge of securing a WAN can become more complicated.

As the industry moves away from the old MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) paradigm, and SD-WAN popularity continues to soar, it is important to understand how to best secure the data that traverses your WAN without unnecessarily sacrificing performance or adding complexity. Premium, cloud-based, SDWaaS (SD-WAN as a Service) is a holistic WAN solution that is uniquely capable of offering enterprise-grade security in a converged, scalable, and efficient manner.

To help explain the advantages of SDWaaS, we’ll first dive into the legacy, appliance-based DIY approach to SD-WAN, the associated security challenges, and then review the features of SDWaaS that help make a converged and secure SD-WAN infrastructure possible.

The appliance-based SD-WAN approach to security

The DIY approach to SD-WAN involves enterprises deploying and maintaining SD-WAN appliances to more efficiently (when compared to MPLS) route Internet-bound traffic. The old MPLS solution generally entailed organizations backhauling data through corporate datacenters or headquarters before then routing it on to the public Internet. This approach creates the “trombone routing” problem many enterprises have struggled with and is inefficient both from a cost and performance aspect.

While DIY SD-WAN solves the trombone routing problem, it generally does not come prepackaged with integrated security. What does this mean? Enterprises are left to craft their own security solutions to add security to their WAN infrastructure. Deployment of security devices in an unconverted, site-by-site manner can lead to a hodgepodge of solutions that are difficult to scale and maintain at the enterprise level. These challenges only become greater when they are compounded with the difficulties of onboarding mobile users or adding new locations (for example when mergers and acquisitions occur). At best, this approach enables enterprises to gain security while also adding complexity and a maintenance burden. At worst, this approach leads to gaps in the security plan and vulnerabilities.

The security benefits of SDWaaS

Given its position in the cloud, SDWaaS is inherently designed to enable a holistic, converged, and scalable approach to SD-WAN. The SD-WAN services (e.g. Policy-based Routing) enterprises expect from any SD-WAN solution are integrated with robust security stack creating an all-in-one, easy to manage solution. Not only does this minimize the potential for blind spots, but it also helps to make an enterprise WAN more secure than the alternatives.

For example, premium SDWaaS providers have Points of Presence (PoPs) across the globe that are connected using fully-meshed encrypted tunnels. Premium SDWaaS providers only allow authorized users to access their SLA-backed, Tier 1 ISP (Internet Service Provider) supported backbones.   • Secure Web Gateways (SWGs)– SWGs act as filters that can block access to websites based on predefined lists and/or categorizations. Users may not love this feature (Netflix is totally work related!), but admins will certainly appreciate it.
  • Advanced Threat Protection- This feature refers to the various heuristics that allow SDWaaS solutions to detect and address threats to a network. Anti-malware and Intrusion Protection Systems (IPSs) fall into this category. Threats can be identified based on behavioral characteristics and then contained.
  • Security Analytics– Networking and security events are logged and used by premium SDWaaS solutions for incident analysis and troubleshooting. This granular approach to capturing data coupled with advanced analytics techniques enable enhanced threat detection and root cause analysis.

Finally, a drying agent is sent through the hole, then the holes are sealed, and the windows become new.  Depending on the type of window you have, you will need the following supplies:

  • Caulking gun

What if the window is broken?

To save money you do not need to replace the insulating windows but opt to repair them. You will only need to replace the glass. This is less expensive than getting brand new frames.

You will first need to remove all the broken glass from the frame. Then you will need to find a glass supplier with the type of glass that you need. You will then need to install the exterior glass pane first (dependent on the design of your window) and the interior glass pane. Following these steps, you may now finalize the installation.

Depending on the design of your windows, you will use different methods:

  • Windows with a rubber gasket: If your windows have wooden sashes, you will need to remove the sash pieces first. Then remove the small screws that are holding the rails and stiles. You should use a rubber mallet to make the frame lose from the gasket and double pane glass. Then remove the gasket from the glass system and fit it onto your new double pane window unit. Use silicone to seal the small gaps.
  • Windows that use sealing tape – Pry out the window stops with a putty knife first. Then with a utility knife, you must cut off the existing tape. Make sure that you completely remove all the old tape using an all-purpose solvent. Smear the new sealing tape on the frame and lower the double pane window to stick. Seal all the gaps with silicon, be sure to use a clear silicone.
  • Windows with caulking around glass: Pry and remove the wooden stops. Just like with the sealing tape, you should clean out all the old caulking using a blade. You may want to use a hair dryer or heat gun to soften the previous adhesive and scrape it all off. When it is dry you may apply to caulk to the frame and lower it onto the double pane window. Once again apply clear silicone to any small holes or spaces.

Once this is done you should level the window and thereafter tack the window in its place. You may want to use shims to fill the spaces between the jambs and the framing as the window may have some movement despite using nails. The shims will help to centralize the window in the opening. Later, you will trim the shims to fit perfectly in the spaces. Don’t forget to fill around the entire window with silicone once you are done and fill the nail holes. When the silicone dries you may paint over it to match the trims on the rest of your home.

Repairing a broken glass does not have to be a costly affair. You will need to do relevant research and educate yourself on the various ways relevant to the type of window you have. Once you know this, repairing is simple and cost-effective. In some instances, it is difficult to find a suitable window repair near you so it may be the best option to learn from a DIY video. However, you may want to enlist the help of another person to help you if you are not confident enough to try it on your own.
